Abstract

The recent revelations of government surveillance in the United States by Edward Snowden have had a profound effect on attitudes towards and perceptions of privacy. Given that this area of technology is highly privacy-sensitive and that the market is dominated by US companies and their local subsidiaries, the Snowden revelations led to changing perceptions of privacy in the cloud business. Therefore, this research aims to provide a European perspective, and discusses how relevant stakeholders, namely regulators, adopting organizations, and suppliers are reacting. The author argues that the technology was before black-boxed with a strong, common understanding of its risks, beneits and regulations and a supporting organising vision, and that this box is now being opened and stirred up as a result.
